The finger ratio from the palm as opposed to the back of hand???
Hi All,
Forgive me if this seems a really stupid question, but I am hoping the more logical and observant of you can explain why, if looking at the finger ratio from the palm perspective it is the reverse from the back of hand perspective. I have always looked at it from the back of hand perspective as this gives a more accurate indication of finger length to palm ratio. Ie when looking at fire, air, earth and water types.
In anticipation

Re: The finger ratio from the palm as opposed to the back of hand???
Sorry about the above question, I think it comes about because of subtle shifts in muscles as the hand rotates, but when palm reading I generally look at the back of the hand to see both the relative lengths of the fingers in relation to the overall hand lengths and each other and the hand type, the way the fingers are naturally spaced etc.
I find there is less peripheral stuff to deal with at this time so have always looked at finger ratios from this perspective.
Is there any reason Martjin why you prefer the palm side?

Hi Felicity, great question!!
Yes, there are even multiple reasons:
1) Only from the inner palm one can measure the '2D:4D digit ratio' (basically because all researchers about this topic relates to the inner side of the palm).
2) When one starts considering the finger length via the back of the palm, one is face with the problem that there is no clearly defined point where the fingers end. So, it might actually be quite impossible to make an (repeatable) 'measurements'.
3) When considering the finger length via the back of the hand... one sort of gets an impression about the length of the finger bones. And should also be aware that 'finger bone' measurements usually result in LOWER DIGIT RATIOS!!
See for example the following study (where the finger length ratio are studied via radiographic assessments):
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2423386/
Felicity, this implicates that via your method (via the back of the hand) you will usually find that most men AND WOMEN will 'appear' to have a low "2D:4D digit ratio". But if you would start measuring the length of the fingers via the inner palm... some of them (especially some women) might actually have a HIGH "2D:4D digit ratio".
So, one should conclude that can not simply compare finger length 'observations' from the back of the hand with finger length 'measurements' from the inner hand!!
I hope this makes sense!?
