The vocabulary of Chimpanzees: 66 gestures decoded!
This month (july 2014), researchers from Scotland claim to have identified 66 gestures used intentionally to communicate by wild chimpanzees in Uganda. The new study, published in the journal Current Biology, created the first-ever chimpanzee dictionary of sorts, deciphering just what the apes were saying to each other.
Some of the highlights:
- 66 gestures (many with the hands involved) are used intentionally to communicate 19 meanings by wild chimpanzees
- Researchers analyzed >4500 cases to extract true (non-play) meanings for 36 gestures
- Gestures have the same meaning(s) across individual signalers
- Flexible use of several gestures for same goal is higher during social negotiation
Here's a detailed report presented by the researchers describing how the individual gestures correlate with behavior:

Interesting to hear this. Thanks for the sharing!
