How long is your pinky finger... really?
Traditionally, the length of the pinky finger is 'judged' via the upper horizontal crease on the ring finger. But what does this 'classic method' really say about the true length of the little finger. Actually... not much at all!
Basically, the problem with this 'classic method' method is that is completely ignores the setting of the pinky finger:
For example:
- a short pinky finger with a high setting may look 'normal';
- and a long pinky with a low setting may look 'normal' as well.
But obviously, the there is a big difference.... and the truth is that in these examples the length of both pinky fingers is by fact not normal at all!
And additionally, the picture above shows that the result of this 'classic method' not only depends on the setting of the pinky finger (A), but also depends on:
B - the length of nail phalange of the ring finger;
C - the width of the seize/width/height of the distal interphalangeal crease(s)
D - and even the length of the full ring finger!
So, despite this 'classic method' has been used for decades at least... anyone who starts thinking about this method will conclude that this method doesn't really do what it is supposed to do: providing a reliable impression about the length of the little finger.
Now, despite the fact that this 'classic method' has been used by many experienced hand readers... and the fact this it has been introduced in scientific studies*, there is actually a much more sensible method available for measuring the TRUE (relative) length of the pinky finger!
* An interesting example is the following study:
A Study of Finger Length Relation (Ring finger & little finger i.e. 4D:5D) with Human Personality.
For, only a few months ago a discussion at the former PI forum guided me to discover that the length of a normal pinky finger usually approaches exactly 1/3 of the full hand length!
So, with the use of a measurement tool (such as a ruler: I am using the one depicted below which is featured with a solar-cel calculator), one can relatively easily measure the exact length of the little finger.
And after measuring the full hand length (see the picture above: E + F), one can find out with the following criteria whether the true length of the little finger is short/normal/long ... or maybe even very short/very long!
Quote from the PI forum:
"... so some useful guidelines for measuring the relative length of the pinky (compared to the full hand length) are:
- Below 30.5% = very short;
- Between 30.5% and 31.5% = short;
- Between 31.5% and 33.5% = normal;
- Between 33.5% and 34.5% = long;
- And above 34.5% = very long.
But the general rule to keep in mind - and which can be used is:
'A normal pinky finger equals about 1/3 of the full hand length!'"
I hope this method will become usefull for you as well!
PS. NOTICE: Combining this more reliable method with the 'classic method'... can provide also a reliable clue about the 'setting' of the pinky finger; though one should still be aware of the 4 parameters (A, B, C and D) that are involved in the 'classic method'.
Re: How long is your pinky finger... really?
In the following discussion I have been discussing this method for Albert Einstein's left hand (see the left hand in the picture below):

Re: How long is your pinky finger... really?
... I also would like to add here that 2 studies have revealed a link between a short pinky finger (measured with the classic 'crease method'), a high score on Neuroticism, and high levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin (platelet serotonin), see:
